Pump and Filter issues

🔧 Pool Pump & Filter Problems (What to Check)

If your pump or filter isn’t working properly, your whole pool suffers—poor circulation, cloudy water, and algae not far behind. Most issues come down to blockages, air leaks, or worn parts. Work through these steps and you’ll usually find the cause quickly.

1. Check the Pump Is Actually Running

Start simple.

  • Is the pump turning on?
  • Any humming but not spinning?
  • Tripping the breaker?

If it’s completely dead, you could be dealing with a power issue or a failed motor.

2. Look at Water Flow

This tells you a lot straight away.

  • Weak return jets = low flow
  • No flow = blockage, air issue, or pump problem

Good circulation is essential—if water isn’t moving, nothing else works properly.

3. Empty the Baskets

Blocked baskets are one of the most common causes.

  • Clean the skimmer basket
  • Clean the pump basket

Even partial blockages can seriously restrict flow.

4. Check for Air in the System

If you see bubbles coming from the return jets, air is getting in somewhere.

  • Check the pump lid is sealing properly
  • Inspect O-rings for cracks or wear
  • Make sure the water level isn’t too low

Air leaks reduce efficiency and can stop proper filtration.

5. Check Filter Pressure

Your pressure gauge is one of the best diagnostic tools.

  • Use a reliable gauge like the Pool Filter Pressure Gauge
  • High pressure → dirty or blocked filter
  • Low pressure → flow issue or pump problem

Knowing your normal reading makes problems easy to spot.

6. Clean or Backwash the Filter

Dirty filters kill performance.

  • Sand,Glass or DE filter → backwash until water runs clear
  • Cartridge filter → remove and hose it down thoroughly

If it hasn’t been cleaned in a while, a deep clean or replacement may be needed.

7. Inspect the Filter Media

If cleaning doesn’t fix the issue, the media may be worn out.

  • Cartridges clog and lose efficiency over time
  • Sand can become compacted or ineffective

At that point, replacement is usually the best option.

8. Check Valves and Pipework

Sometimes the issue isn’t the pump or filter at all.

  • Make sure valves are fully open and correctly set
  • Check for blocked suction lines
  • Look for anything restricting water flow

9. Listen for Pump Problems

Your pump will usually give warning signs.

  • Grinding noise → possible bearing issue
  • Humming but not starting → motor or capacitor issue
  • Intermittent operation → electrical fault or overheating

These usually point to repair or replacement.

⏱️ Quick Summary

  • Blocked baskets → low flow
  • Dirty filter → high pressure
  • Air leaks → bubbles and weak performance
  • Worn media → poor filtration
  • Pump faults → noise or no circulation

⚠️ Common Mistakes

  • Not cleaning baskets regularly
  • Ignoring pressure changes
  • Running the pump with low water level
  • Waiting too long between filter cleans

💡 Practical Tips

  • Check baskets weekly in peak season
  • Watch pressure gauge trends, not just single readings
  • Clean filters before they become heavily blocked
  • Fix small flow issues early before they become major problems
